I love back to school time.
I love a fresh notebook, newly sharpened pencil, finding out who my kid’s teacher will be, and thinking about the opportunities the new year will bring for our family.
I also used to love Back-To-School clothes shopping.
Notice that I said “used to”…
It is still a good time with DD (who is seven), but DS (who is ten) recently has become a male “diva” and picky about his attire. So much so, that they days of me “picking a few things up without him” are gone.
(Well, I still could. But he won’t wear any of it and then I just have to return it.)
Which is why one of the places I enjoy going shopping with him is JCPenney.
JCP has always been one of our top places for finding trendy clothes that are easy on the budget (plus they often have coupons and that makes an even better deal.) It’s usually one of the first places we go when we need a new outfit for an event or new staples for everyday living. Plus our local store has been renovated in the last year and the new merchandising makes it so much easier to find style ideas.
So, in order to get DS in the mood for shopping. I made it an event. I picked him up from school, we stop by a restaurant for a snack, and then we started shopping.
Even though my tendency is to “control” every purchase, I stopped myself and let him shop for styles he wanted to wear. I only had two requirements…
- It had to be clothes for Fall/Winter
- I had final say on sizes.
We started by looking for Levi’s jeans. This is always very difficult process. DS is a slim (like a need to “eat a biscuit” slim) and often times the “cool” jeans do not come in slim sizes. Imagine my surprise when we found not one, but three different styles of jeans in “slim”. (Including one pair of skinny jeans – which made his SUPER excited.) And they were all $25 or under.
And my son only likes two kinds of shirts…athletic and western. And JCPenney had a great supply of both. We were able to get the neon Nike sweatshirt (above), as well as this Levi’s Western shirt (below). Both fit him like a glove and he was thrilled with both purchases.
We spent about an hour and half picking out clothes, trying on stuff, and making our final decisions. In the end we had three pairs of Levi Jeans, Nike Sweatshirt, two Arizona Button-Down Western Shirts, Hanes Underwear and T-shirts, two athletic wear jerseys (on clearance for $2.99 – how can you beat that?), Adias Track Jacket, and Leather Belt for $221.23 after using our JCP Coupon.
DS was thrilled with his new purchases.
Mom was thrilled that she had “some” say in his attire.
But the best part, was I got told “Thank You” not once, not twice, but three times. And for a mama that is watching her little boy grow up and having less and less things in common with him…those two words said multiple times were like verbal gold. And that was worth every single penny.

OMG, Carrie. If you would have seen Hubs expression when we got home…it was priceless. The Mizzou Jersey was not my first choice (or any choice, ahem), but it was a Nike Jersey on clearance for $2.99. Too hard to not say “Yes” to, but only after I told DS he couldn’t wear it on Husker game day NOR would he ever go to college there. #huskerstillwedie
