Welcome KC Live Viewers!
Thanks for watching me today and here a brief recap of ways you can eat organic on a budget.
How To Eat Organic On A Budget
1. Look outside the traditional bricks and mortar stores.
Buying from a typical health food bricks and mortar store is convenient, but it comes at a premium. Think outside of the box and save money on organic staples, produce and meat.
Organic Staples: Check out Vitacost, Amazon and Azure Standard. In many cases when you buy online and have it shipped to your house, you will save. Even better, sign up for the Amazon Subscribe & Save Programs and save up to an additional 15% off already reduced prices.
Organic Produce: Community Supported Agriculture is a great way to get organic produce for less, however one of the downsides is it only available for a few months out the year and usually doesn’t include a high selection of fruit. Another options (or in addition to) is utilizing Door To Door Organics, where you can have a customizable delivery of organic fruits and vegetables to your door for a significant savings versus regular retail prices. Also investing in good produce savers can help eliminate waste and save you extra dollars.
Organic Meat & Diary: It’s time to get personal with your local grass-fed or free-range rancher. Buy purchasing a half or quarter of a cow, you will save 50% per pound on meat versus retail. While it is a large expense up front, you can feel safe knowing you have a quality grass-fed animal AND you paid less per pound that at the grocery store.
2. Look at larger companies for their organic labels that have coupons.
Did you know that Dannon owns Stoneyfield Yogurt? Did you know that Kraft owns Kashi? Or that General Mills owns Cascadian Farms and Muir Glen? They do. And because these big corporations own these lines, they have a bigger marketing budget and that means more accessibility to coupons. Also, many of our local health stores take coupons and also have their own store coupons that can be stacked with manufacturer coupons for greater savings.
3. Make your own cleaning supplies.
Purchasing cleaning supplies gets expensive, especially more natural ones. You can save a few dollars by making your own cleaning supplies, and then use those dollars on other organic items.
4. Can, Freeze and Cook From Scratch
I have several tutorials on how to freeze fruit, can peaches, freeze beans, freeze corn and more. Freezing and canning fruit at its peak, usually means paying less per pound and a better product. Then use those freezer items in the winter and enjoy good produce all year long.
Also, avoid convenience foods. They are higher in weird ingredients and they are more expensive. Learn how to do some batch cooking and you will never have a “what’s for dinner” at 5:00 moment again.
5. Come take my class and learn how.
On April 17th, I’ll be teaching a class about how to eat organic on $500 per month for a family of four. More details – HERE.
