This giveaway has ended. Congrats to our winner, Allison D.!
If the Holidays seem like a marathon to you, perhaps New Years Day is the sweet finish line. The gifts have been given, the company is gone, and you set your sights on a brand new beginning.
Much like Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Years has its own set of traditions. Did you know that people in the South believe a meal of greens and black-eyed peas with pork brings luck to the New Year? In the Midwest, we often associate New Years with football, family, and food. There’s nothing quite like waking up a little late on New Years Day and making a hearty brunch before settling in for some good old American Football.
In keeping with the New Years tradition, HoneyBaked Ham has several recipes to help ring in the New Year in style. Check out this Asparagus Tart recipe. A gourmet style dish without the fuss. Simple yet eloquent. Brunch-worthy goodness.
Preheat oven to 450º. In a medium frying pan over medium high heat, sauté for about 1 minute:
1 tablespoon butter
1 shallot finely chopped
Add and cook until crisp tender (about 5 minutes):
1 bunch trimmed Asparagus (about 1 pound) cut into 1 inch pieces
Set aside. Open and roll out on a lightly floured piece of parchment to approx. a 10 x16 rectangle:
1 sheet puff pastry dough.
Transfer both to a baking sheet. Pat into its surface, leaving a 1 inch border edge:
1/2 pound chevre cheese.
Sprinkle it with:
the prepared shallots and asparagus
2 tablespoons sliced sundried tomatoes packed in oil
3/4 cup diced HoneyBaked Ham
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.
Brush the edge of the tart with :
1 egg yolk mixed with 1/2 teaspoon water.
Bake until golden brown and pastry is puffy, about 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool slightly and serve.
Serves 4
HoneyBaked has generously offered a $75 gift card to one lucky KCM reader. How will you get your New Years party started?

My husbands family has a tradition of eating hotdogs, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Wouldn’t say its a favorite but it’s what we do. The times my BIL had to skip the meal because they were traveling he has been downsized at work. So they do not skip it.

A favorite new year’s tradition is to not do any dishes or wash clothes on New Year’s day. Sounds weird but my grandma uses to say that you’re washing away all your new luck and blessings. So you’re supposed to just enjoy food, friends, family, and let the dishes either pile up, or stack in the dishwasher until the next day or simply use paper products. I like this tradition.
We like to stay home, build a fire, listen to music, tell stories and drink cider.

My favorite way to spend New Years Eve is to have an early family dinner with special foods. I have 2 teenagers and we fill up the rec room in the basement with teenagers and let them host a party with a few fireworks at midnight. Upstairs, hubby and I snuggle, talk about the past year and the up coming year and watch the festivities on tv.

When I was a kid, my mom would make cotned beef and cabbage and black eyed peas on New Years Day. She would hide a penny in the cabbage, and whoever was served the penny on their dish was meant to have good luck that year. It’s been years since I have had that, but perhaps I should do it with my kids this year.
