There are days when you need a pick-me-up after either a long day or a long night. There are days when you wish you could wash away 10 pounds of your body weight before putting on your jeans. And then there are THOSE days, when you need a pick-me-up before you put on your jeans.
Enter in this all-natural grapefruit and peppermint sugar scrub recipe.
I’ve been experimenting with making my own beauty products over the last year. And while I could go all “Bill Nye The Science Guy” on my reasons why…in a nutshell, I wanted to have top-quality natural products and not pay a fortune for them. In my research, I found that most of the “effective ingredients” I loved in my beauty products were available through Amazon and cost less than one jar of a beloved cream, spray, gel, or lotion.
(And let me just say, if I can make my own beauty products, you can too.)
One of my favorite things to make are sugar scrubs. I love the way my skin feels and looks after a good “scrubbing”! Particularly this grapefruit and peppermint sugar scrub recipe, which not only gives you a pick-me-up (thank you peppermint), but also can combats the appearance of cellulite and promote healthy skin (thank you grapefruit).
(So more energy and less cellulite…a magical combination, right?)
A couple of notes:
- As the recipe is written, the sugar is on the course side. If you are looking for “softer” scrub, use 3/4 cup white sugar and 1/4 cup raw sugar and increase the avocado oil to 1/2 cup.
- Some people like to use coconut oil in their scrubs, I don’t. I find coconut oil to be too thick and have a hard time being absorbed into the skin…enter my favorite Avocado oil. I find it to be smoother, have no scent, and absorb almost immediately into my skin.
- I use these 8 oz glass Ball Jars because they have a wide mouth (which makes it easy to get the scrub out) and they are air tight. I just give it a quick shake to distribute the oil around before I jump in the shower. Plus, if you want to get fancy, they have plastic lids available too.
- I use doTERRA Grapefruit and Peppermint essential oils. I recommend and only use pure therapeutic grade oils. (If you are new to essential oils, here is how I use them in my everyday life.)

Hi Kelly – how long should this quantity last? Does it have an expiry date?
Kelly says
It depends how it is stored…but in an air-tight container that stays primarily in a cabinet…three months.

This sounds wonderful. One of my daughters makes her own sugar scrub, but doesn’t add any essential oils to it. I think I’ll make some of this as a Valentine’s gift for her!

Thanks for sharing, sounds like a good exfoliator.

Can this be used for the face? I use a facial cleanser that has grapefruit and peppermint EOs and sugar beads. I was trying to find a homemade version to save money. Thanks!
