Last week I was privledged to attend a lunch sponsored by Libby Canned Goods and The Motherhood with seven other amazing local bloggers (from the back: Anjanette from Eat From Your Pantry; Candi from KCMetroMoms; Hannah Keeley; Me; Kristen from Dine & Dish; Jenn from Super Jenn; Heather from My Kansas City Mommy; Becky from Hillcrest; and Tracie from Penny Pinchin Mom).
The purpose of the lunch – to talk about ways we get our families “Back-To-The-Table” and how we get them to talk and stay at the table. Needless to say, we had a hoot.
Highlights
- I’m pretty sure I scared Kristen when I was talking about my food stockpile.
- Hannah scared me when she talked about her food budget for her family of nine.
- Tracie will always be known as the two Cheez-It Mom (and she really is a super-mom).
Best Highlight: Libby’s, as well as each blogger, purchased items to be donated to Hillcrest Transitional Housing to help other families be able to “Get-Back-To-The-Table” too.
Here is what we donated.
- A TON of Libby’s Canned Goods
- Ziploc containers
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Red “You are Special” plates
- Votive candles and coupon organizer
- Chatter box – conversation starter
- Mixing bowls
Want to get on the donation action too? Come be a part of the Libby’s Virtual Canned Food Drive that I’m hosting.
And since Libby’s wants to make sure that everyone has a chance to take something “home” – they are sponsoring a giveaway that will include a Libby’s Reusable Bag filled with Libby’s Canned Goods, Hannah’s book – Total Mom Makeover and a state-of-the-art can opener.

Wow, I’m impressed. You all did a great job!
To get back to the table, starts with me. I make the meals, I really have to prepare the meals and make them all move to the table. I know it would be beneficial. Usually we talk about our day and what’s upcoming.

We like to sit at the table and just talk about our day. We fill dad in on what we did and also talk about what we have planned the next day. It is just nice to have that family connection.

To get back to the table I make sure to cook meals at home at least 5 nights a week. We do not watch tv while eating, we discuss how our days were. We also discuss plans for the following day or the weekend and try to come up with fun family activities that we can all do togethere.
Janelle says
We always talk about the day and things that are going on. We have a family dinner every night…it’s just what we do. The kids would freak if we didn’t! 🙂
Rebecca says
To get to the table, first we need to get a table. *blush* We’re newlyweds that just moved from GA to MO and I still haven’t found a job yet (High School Math Teacher). So our dining room is kind of bare… But I cook almost nightly and we sit on the couch and eat dinner and talk about our days. He asks me what I got free today usually too.

When we sit down for dinner we talk about the day’s natural disasters, such as the one that hit Hungary.
“Government officials said Friday that 600,000 to 700,000 cubic meters (158 million to 184 million gallons) of sludge escaped and inundated three villages before entering the Danube.”
This disaster is equaling in severity the of the oil leak in the Gulf. Disasters like these are going to become more common, NOT less, as industries try and save money and slack on repairs. Due to the global recession new technologies that could prevent these disasters are not being implemented. Be aware of the companies you fund, our job as the consumer is powerful.
On a lighter note, that’s why I like couponing. If I can get a deal on merchandise using a store or manufacturer coupon, they are taking a loss on that product. Since I have no consumer loyalty (with the exception being those companies that are aware of the global crises that now strikes us as our populations sky rocket along with our consumption), I get these products at a loss to the company and save on my budget.
