Today, we are in Lincoln, Nebraska for the Cornhuskers Football Home Opener. And while I wish I could say I will be at the game, I won’t.
(that job went to my son who is going with his Grammy – the football fanatic doesn’t fall far from the tree)
Instead, I’ll be watching Hubs replace my parent’s garage door opener and reading magazines and watching the game on television.
(unfortunately, the only television that can receive the game is in the garage. they don’t have cable or a dish. so it will be me, in the garage, watching my husband fix a garage door opener while I watch the game in a lawn chair…yep, living the dream.)
🙂
So here are a few things that made me happy this week.
1. The True Cost.
I’m a documentary junkie.
I blame Netflix because they make it SO EASY to find a new one to watch.
This week I saw The True Cost and it made me SERIOUSLY think about how I consume (yes, it’s consume) fashion and clothing.
Here is a brief summary.
This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them and the impact it’s having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking new documentary film that pulls back the curtain on an unseen part of our world and asks us each to consider, who pays the price for our clothing?
Ever wonder how Forever 21 can sell a shirt for $9.99 or Target can offer tank tops for $4.00? This movie shows us how.
As a woman who loves other women and tries desperately to build them up instead of tear them down, this movie shook me to my core. It made me sad. And ashamed. And I started rethinking how I purchase clothing. It’s super thought provoking and worth a watch.
And on a side note: I keep wishing that somehow, magically, a new club would start where we watch a documentary on Netflix during the week, then meet on Sunday night to drink wine and talk about it. (Like book club with no books.)
PS: If this is WAY TO DEEP FOR YOUR television watching, my other new addiction is Narcos on Netflix. Cocaine, boobs, drug trafficking…way different.
2. Simply Balanced Sparkling Water – Ginger Peach
During the #whole30 you are not allowed sugar or sweetner of any kind. No honey, stevia, splenda, agave…nada.
So that leaves water, tea and naturally flavored sparkling water.
And I’ve been drinking a LOT of sparkling water and am in LOVE, LOVE, LOVE with Target’s Simply Balanced Sparkling Water in Ginger Peach.
Why?
It isn’t a fruit bomb (aka berry), but it isn’t SUPER SUBTLE like grapefruit, orange or lemon. Plus, that little bit of ginger makes me think I’m drinking an adult beverage.
(and somedays, i need to pretend)
In fact, I’ll probably buy it after I’m done with the #whole30 because I like it so much.
3. Best Free Event in Kansas City – Taste of Local on September 19th
Right now…Mark your calendars for Taste of Local on September 19th from 11 – 3 at the Ritz Charles Convention Center.
Taste of Local is a FREE tasting event from Door to Door Organics that features hundreds of local bakers, producers and farmers.
I love this event because it opens up my eyes to all of the wonderful GOOD FOOD businesses in our community. This is their third event and each year I always find a new local favorite to add to my pantry. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to have one-on-one discussions with the producers to learn more about their items.
(and I never have to eat lunch afterward because I’m so full from all the good grub and beverage samples)
This event is FREE, but they do ask that you RSVP on Facebook so they have enough FREE GOODIES to go around. Hope to see you all there on the 19th…I’ll be showing up after my daughter’s soccer game.
#Whole30 Update
As I write this article, I’m in week three and day 17 of the Whole30.
My thoughts after completing week two:
- I still miss wine. {sniff}
- My energy is finally back. I’m staying up till around 10:15 every night and waking up around 5:00. Also, my desire for an afternoon nap is completely gone. I have energy all day long.
- I’m still sleeping REALLY, REALLY good at night. Since I started Whole30, I have only had one night of insomnia vs before where it would be two to three night (sometimes more) every week.
- According the book, at day 16 you are suppose to experience Tiger Blood. I’m not sure what the hell that is, but I haven’t seen it yet. Maybe it is just delayed.
- My clothes fit better. Strangely, I’m not losing inches in my mid-section (aka the TUMMY), but have noticed it in my rear end and waist. I haven’t been on the scale yet (that comes at the end), so I don’t know if I’ve lost weight.
- This weekend will be the first time we are traveling. It will be more of a challenge to stay on track while at my parent’s house and traveling to and from Nebraska.
- More updates next week when I will be HOME STRETCH.
And it case you missed it, here are some new articles from this week.
