I love the idea behind the cookbook Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner? by Lisa Caponigri.
First, it is filled EXCLUSIVELY with Italian Old World recipes. (So if you have “cooking envy” while watching Clemenza cook Marinera on “The Godfather”, this is your cookbook.)
Second, it is about taking time on Sunday, to cook, eat, and embrace each other as a family during a meal. Lisa created a cookbook filled with 52 meal plans…one for each week.
And that is why I think I fell in love with this cookbook.
We are Nebraska Transplants. And living several states away from our extended family means we only get to have “family meals” on special holidays or during brief visits.
But the author, Lisa Caponigri, talks about it not needing to be your immediate family that has to come over to experience Sunday Dinner, but your own created family made up of close friends.
And she’s right. There is something magical about cooking and breaking bread with friends.
Especially when you can do it with Italian Recipes from Old World Italy like this one.
Classic Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
6 cloves of garlic, cut in half
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
4 cans crushed tomatoes, 28 oz (Use San Marzano Brand if possible)
1.5 tablespoons sugar
1.5 teaspoons dried oregano
1.5 teaspoons fresh basil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Red Wine to taste (if that is your thing – like me)
Directions
1. In a large pot, heat garlic in olive oil over low heat for three minutes. Don’t allow garlic to brown.
2. Add remaining ingredients and simmer over low heat for two to three hours.
And because everyone should be able to get their “Clemenza” on…(2) Kansas City Mamas Readers will win a copy of Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner? by Lisa Caponigri.
