Omaha Zoo Photo Collage

We love Omaha.

There. I said it.

And not because I’m originally from Nebraska. (Although, that helps.) It is because it is such a great family-friendly destination. Regardless of what your family is in to (shopping, museums, zoo, sports, etc.), it is available to you in Omaha.

We were lucky enough to go to Omaha over Spring Break 2013 and had a blast.

I love the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo. If you have not been, I highly-highly-highly recommend you make the trip.

There are several amazing exhibits at the zoo including the Butterfly and Insect Pavilion, Hubbard Gorilla Valley, Desert Dome, Scott Aquarium, Cat House, and Lied Jungle (just to name a few).

During out last trip, the most memorable experience happened with DS (age 10) in the Cat House.

DS had been begging to have the camera, so I gave it to him while I went to the bathroom. When I got back, he was screamin’ with delight because of how close the lion got to him at the window.

At first, I thought close meant “Not clear the heck over on the other side of his habitat.” But as he showed me the photos that he took, I realized that close meant, “I think you would be a tasty snack if this glass wasn’t here.”

DS took all of these photos with a standard DSLR and 35mm lens. Yep, he was able to see up the nostrils of the King of the Forest. And for a 10 year old…how COOL is that??

Now as we move toward summer, we’re planning another Omaha weekend where we can see the zoo again (and not freeze to death), go to a baseball game, and hike over the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to Iowa.

    I love them all, although after being sprayed by an elephant at the KC zoo, I don’t get too close to them anymore!

    As a NE to KC transplant like you, I too love love love the HD Zoo! It’s an absurdly amazing experience. I remember all the excitement when they were building the rainforest and going for the first time! Stilly favorite place at the zoo…especially love the sloths!!

    I am a Kansas City Mama of twin girls who are almost 3 years old so you know i have to be a die hard couponer to save save save!! .I visit your site daily and already am a FB fan . My girls have never been to the zoo in NE but we hope to go one day . My favorite animal I would say are the kangaroos !!
