We love Omaha.
There. I said it.
And not because I’m originally from Nebraska. (Although, that helps.) It is because it is such a great family-friendly destination. Regardless of what your family is in to (shopping, museums, zoo, sports, etc.), it is available to you in Omaha.
We were lucky enough to go to Omaha over Spring Break 2013 and had a blast.
I love the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo. If you have not been, I highly-highly-highly recommend you make the trip.
There are several amazing exhibits at the zoo including the Butterfly and Insect Pavilion, Hubbard Gorilla Valley, Desert Dome, Scott Aquarium, Cat House, and Lied Jungle (just to name a few).
During out last trip, the most memorable experience happened with DS (age 10) in the Cat House.
DS had been begging to have the camera, so I gave it to him while I went to the bathroom. When I got back, he was screamin’ with delight because of how close the lion got to him at the window.
At first, I thought close meant “Not clear the heck over on the other side of his habitat.” But as he showed me the photos that he took, I realized that close meant, “I think you would be a tasty snack if this glass wasn’t here.”
DS took all of these photos with a standard DSLR and 35mm lens. Yep, he was able to see up the nostrils of the King of the Forest. And for a 10 year old…how COOL is that??
Now as we move toward summer, we’re planning another Omaha weekend where we can see the zoo again (and not freeze to death), go to a baseball game, and hike over the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to Iowa.
