Nothing says OUTDOORS more than making S’mores over a crackling fire in the fire pit!

Spring and Fall are my all-time favorite seasons. Cool (as opposed to hot or cold) evenings and NO BUGS means we are outside around our fire pit armed with our marshmallows and sticks.

To help speed up the s’mores making process, we use a couple Homemade Fire Starter Kits. By far and away, these are the easiest fire starter kits you’ll ever make. I first saw these from Over the Big Moon a couple of years ago and have been making them ever since. Essentially, these little fire starters are made up of materials almost every home has lying around or in your recycling bin–toilet paper tubes, dryer lint or shredded paper, and newspaper.

There has been some debate about whether or not dryer lint, which is highly flammable, is safe to use as a fire starter. If you wear mostly cotton clothing, your lint should be “natural” and fine, but if you wear more synthetic clothing (or just want to be on the safe side), fill your toilet paper tubes with shredded paper out our your paper shredder.

Homemade Fire Starter Kits

What you will need:

• toilet paper rolls
• dryer lint or shredded paper from your paper shredder
• newspaper

Instructions:

1. Fill your toilet paper roll(s) with dryer lint or shredded paper.

2. Lay a piece of newspaper flat, and roll your filled toilet paper roll in the newspaper.

3. Tuck the ends of the newspaper into the open ends of the toilet paper roll to hold in the dryer lint or shredded paper.

4. Tuck one or two DIY Fire Pit Starters into the bottom of your wood pile in your fire pit. Light the fire pit starters and watch the magic happen!

5. Now grab your family and S’mores supplies so you can enjoy all fall has to offer around your fire pit!!

Please note: Just a reminder that only adults should start fires in the fire pit and kids should ALWAYS be closely supervised around any fire.
