Wine is a funny thing.
It’s made from grapes.
But somehow, someway, it is able to pick up different “flavors and aromas” from the area in which it is grown. (Usually those smells are described with words like earthy, ripe fruit, tobacco, clove, peaches, pears, etc.) And for the most part, those aromas are pretty consistent within each varietal.
For example, Sauvignon Blancs are known for their crisp acidity and tropical fruit flavors.
Which makes the 2010 Starborough Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand so interesting because it smells like grapefruit.
Yes, grapefruit.
I understand if you did the nose sqinch when I said grapefruit, but hear me out.
I like this wine because it is different, because it was awesome served icy cold (and on a HOT day that is a good thing), and because it pairs awesome with a summer salad, Thai food, or a creamy cheese plate with grapes. (Yes, grapes that taste like real grapes.)
It’s a drink now wine. Drink it now – like today when it is 100 degrees, you just got done grocery shopping with two kids and you want something icy cold.
(‘Cause today that what it looks like in the area I’m grown from…)

Note: This wine should be available at most liquor outlets. Please be responsible when you drink wine – and never drive drunk…seriously, that is just stupid in this day in age.
What about you? Have any new found summer favorites? Let me know in the comments (cause I love trying new wines) or link up. Because life is too short to drink bad wine.

Sounds like an interesting one to try, Kelly. I’ll have to look for it.

I have only been following your blog a month or so so not sure if you have already tried this, but I love Martin & Weyrich’s 2005 Moscato Allegro. It is a California wine. I am not an expert wine taster, but I would describe it as an intense fruit taste, that ends with a crisp, clean finish. Has hints of peaches, oranges, and some floral… Not sure where to get it up here (I havent looked) but my mother lives south of KC on the MO side and always brings it up for me! Soooo good!
