Thirsty Thursday is the quest to drink good, cheap wine that is $10.00 and under. Want some more recommendations? Check out the past cheap wine posts on Thirsty Thursday.
Note: There are some wines, no matter how good they are, should not be brought to another person’s house. This is one of those wines.
Yes, this wine lover drinks wine from a box.
And I’m not afraid to admit it.
But I am afraid to schlep the box to my friend’s party.
Not because of the quality, but because of the ridicule of bringing a “box of wine”. Cause let’s be honest – when we think of “box of wine” – we think of the stuff that our old aunt Rose had in her fridge that tasted like turpentine and was about the same color.
However, the boxed wine of our childhood is not the boxed wine of today. Many quality wineries are producing wine in boxes – just like this week’s pick – 2008 Big House Red Wine for $16.00 (equivalent of four bottles).
This wine is a kitchen-sink blend (cause everything but the kitchen sink is in it) of 23% syrah, 14% petite sirah, 9% grenache, 9% montepulciano, 6% mourvedre, 6% sangiovese, 6% aglianico, 6% tannat, 5% nero d’avola, 4% sagrantino, 3% touriga, 3% barbera and 3% petite verdot.
For a wine in this price point, it has a remarkable nose. But the taste is just as good with a great fruit burst of plum, raspberry, and cranberry – followed by a spicy pepper kick and smooth tannins.
Since it does COME in a box, I wouldn’t say this is an elegant wine. (Shoot, look at the graphics.) But it is a fun, easy to drink wine that pairs well with grilled meats or good Kansas City BBQ.
And even better, you can drink it whenever and never feel bad about “not drinking the whole bottle”. Since it is housed in a air-tight container – it will taste as good tomorrow as it did today. But don’t try to get three weeks of out it, because no wine should or can last that long.
Which is the perfect excuse to have a glass each night, don’t you think. It is good for our heart, right?
Note: This wine should be available at most liquor outlets. Please be responsible when you drink wine – and never drive drunk…seriously, that is just stupid in this day in age.
What about you? Have a wine, cocktail or spirit you want to share? Link up or leave a comment. Because life is too short to drink bad wine.

I love this wine…and most of the nice box wines.

Here’s another good box wine to try – Bodegas Osborne’s Seven Red Wine of Spain. We’ve picked it up at Gomer’s before and took it to Thanksgiving. The KC Star had an article about box wines a few months ago –

Jessica – Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll put it on my “try” list.
