2014 Kansas City Kids Summer Reading Programs
Most of the local business and libraries have announced their 2014 Kansas City Kids Summer Reading Programs.
Summer Reading Programs are an awesome way to instill the love of reading with your kiddos and help them “keep” the aptitude they developed over the previous school year.
Here is a list of the 2014 Kansas City Kids Summer Reading Programs.
American Girl Reading Program – American Girl Stores will be having Read-a-palooza from May 1 – August 26, 2014. They will have special reading events throughout the summer where you can listen to a story, create a special bookmark, and more at the local store. In addition, there are free American Girl ebooks and lesson and learning guides on the site.
Barnes & Noble Imagination Destination – This summer reading program through Barnes & Noble gives your child the ability to earn a FREE book after reading 8 books and keeping track of them in a reading log. Runs May 20 through September 2, 2014.
Book Adventure – Sylvan offers this FREE online reading incentive program. After your child reads a book, they take a simple comprehension quiz to make sure they understood what they read. (Similar to AR tests.)
There are hundreds of books to choose from in all reading levels. These are common books that can be found at your local library. Once they have earned enough points they can trade them in for some really neat prizes.
Chuck E Cheese – Use the Chuck E Cheese Rewards Calendar to keep track of your child’s reading. After they complete two weeks of reading, take the completed calendar to Chuck E Cheese for 10 FREE tokens.
Junie B Jones Reading Club – Get a FREE reading log and activity brochure through Random House.
Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program – If you homeschool, you can sign up for the BOOK IT! program that has previous only been available to traditional schools. Enrollment begins on May 1, 2014.
Pottery Barn Kids Book Club – Read all of the books on the PBK story list (as individuals or families) and once complete, take your list to Pottery Barn Kids to receive a FREE book. In addition, there will be weekly reading events at stores that include snacks from Happy Family and activities and prizes from PBS Kids. This event is from May 15 through July 17, 2014.
Scholastic Summer Challenge – Kids log in and keep track of the minutes they have spent reading over the summer. As they read more, they are entered to win various prizes. Registration begins on May 5, 2014.
Local Public Library – Each library system in our area has different summer reading programs.
Olathe Public Library Summer Reading Program (Program kicks off May 21)
Johnson County Public Library Summer Reading Program (Program kicks off May 19)
Kansas City, KS Public Library Summer Reading Program (Program kicks off May 1)
Mid-Continent Public Library Summer Reading Program (Program kicks off May 19)

Thank you for all of the summer reading program information! I always set out each summer with good intentions to have my kids sign up for multiple reading programs, but a lot of the time the summer gets away from me. Hopefully this summer I will stay on top of it!

You are so welcome! I’m the same way, but this whole list helps me pick and choose the best programs.

Hello! I handle Public Relations for the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library. We’d love to have our program listed, as well. Our sign ups open up May 1st and the program officially starts June 1. The website is available here: http://roomres.kckpl.org/evanced/sr/homepage.asp?ProgramID=33
My email is [email protected] if anyone has any questions. Thanks!

Awesome! Thanks Kim. I’ll add it to the list.

Hi Kelly. Thanks for adding it, but I noticed that you put our link under the Kansas City Public Library. We are actually two different systems. The Kansas City Public Library operates in KC MO. The library I represent, Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, operates in KCK and Wyandotte County. Would you be able to put the link I gave you above with the name Kansas City, Kansas Public Library? Thanks!

Has anyone heard anything about the KC MO library summer reading program this year? I’ve been looking for info on it. Please post if you see anything. Thanks!

Called the KC Central Library this morning and they said since theirs does not begin until June they don’t publish anything until the week before.
