2014 Kansas City Kids Summer Reading Programs

Most of the local business and libraries have announced their 2014 Kansas City Kids Summer Reading Programs.

Summer Reading Programs are an awesome way to instill the love of reading with your kiddos and help them “keep” the aptitude they developed over the previous school year.

Here is a list of the 2014 Kansas City Kids Summer Reading Programs.

American Girl Summer Reading Program

American Girl Reading Program – American Girl Stores will be having Read-a-palooza from May 1 – August 26, 2014. They will have special reading events throughout the summer where you can listen to a story, create a special bookmark, and more at the local store. In addition, there are free American Girl ebooks and lesson and learning guides on the site.

Barnes & Noble Imagination Destination – This summer reading program through Barnes & Noble gives your child the ability to earn a FREE book after reading 8 books and keeping track of them in a reading log. Runs May 20 through September 2, 2014.

Book Adventure – Sylvan offers this FREE online reading incentive program. After your child reads a book, they take a simple comprehension quiz to make sure they understood what they read. (Similar to AR tests.)

There are hundreds of books to choose from in all reading levels. These are common books that can be found at your local library. Once they have earned enough points they can trade them in for some really neat prizes.

Chuck E Cheese – Use the Chuck E Cheese Rewards Calendar to keep track of your child’s reading. After they complete two weeks of reading, take the completed calendar to Chuck E Cheese for 10 FREE tokens.

Junie B Jones Reading Club – Get a FREE reading log and activity brochure through Random House.

Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program – If you homeschool, you can sign up for the BOOK IT! program that has previous only been available to traditional schools. Enrollment begins on May 1, 2014.

Pottery Barn Kids Book Club – Read all of the books on the PBK story list (as individuals or families) and once complete, take your list to Pottery Barn Kids to receive a FREE book.  In addition, there will be weekly reading events at stores that include snacks from Happy Family and activities and prizes from PBS Kids. This event  is from May 15 through July 17, 2014.

Scholastic Summer Challenge

Scholastic Summer Challenge – Kids log in and keep track of the minutes they have spent reading over the summer. As they read more, they are entered to win various prizes. Registration begins on May 5, 2014.
