I have to say, with out a doubt, this was the craziest two-store trip I’ve ever taken with my kiddos.
Not to brag, but my kids are great shoppers.
- They know to not to ask for everything they see.
- They know if we are buying something for them, they will make the decision of kind/flavor.
- That Mom walks fast in the store and you better keep up.
- And I EXPECT great manners at checkout – which includes standing by the cart with their hands on it while I’m giving my coupons to the checker and paying the final bill.
With that being said, today was none of the above. I had one hour to hit two stores, drive home, unload groceries, take an AMAZING photo and put away groceries before leaving for Nebraska to take the kiddos to their Grandparent’s house.
I don’t know about your kids, but when mine know they are going to their grandparent’s house for an extended stay they act like spider monkeys on crack cocaine. They are WIRED and bouncing off the walls, each other, and into the grocery carts – if you know what I mean. I really have no idea how many times I said, “You need to stay with mom, you can’t just wonder off” while we were at Hy-Vee – I think over fifteen.
But somehow, someway, in that hour we managed to hit both stores, take a mediocre photo, put away the frozen or refrigerated groceries before hitting the road to Grandpa and Grandma’s House.
My Hy-Vee and Hen House Scores
Okay, this week was 100% stock-up week. There is nothing in the photo that was “needed” (except maybe those Yoplait Delights – I kind of needed one after shopping).
We are really stocked up on produce from our garden and Hen House CSA and still had milk from my trip to Costco. But there was the SUPER cheap popcorn at Hen House and so many great deals on stockpile items at Hy-Vee (I’m almost positive I didn’t pay more that a $1.00 for all but two items) that I couldn’t resist making another trip.
That’s the great thing about having a deep freeze (or two in my case) – so many of these items I bought at “rock bottom” prices to be stockpiled and they will be put directly into my freezer for another day. (Except, those Yoplait Delights. Kiddos are going to be lucky if there are any left when they get home from their Grandparent’s house.
Pictured: Red Baron Pizza By The Slice, Tombstone Frozen Pizza (it’s the BIG white glob – again mediocre photo), Betty Crocker Brownie Mix, Hy-Vee Hot Dog Buns, Hy-Vee Flour, (4) Hy-Vee Gelatin, Hy-Vee Tortilla Chips, Mission Tortillas, (5) Loaves of Hy-Vee Cottage Bread, Hy-Vee Vinegar (for all those refrigerator pickles), (4) Kraft Macs and Cheese, Eckrich Sausage, (2) Hy-Vee Cream Cheese, (2) Baby Carrots, 2 lbs of Green Grapes, Dole Iceberg Lettuce, Blueberries, (3) Yoplait Delights, Quaker Chedder Cheese Rice Snacks and (2) Act II Popcorn.
Final Total: $28.07
I’m also submitting for the “Try Me Free” Red Baron Singles Rebate from the 4/25 RP – so I’ll get $3.27 back from that.
If you ad in my Hen House CSA at $25, I’m at $53.07 for the week – under my $75 per week. I’m keeping some in reserve because I’m DANGEROUSLY low on chicken breast and top round steak and am hoping for a good meat sale soon. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
What about you? How are you doing with your budget for the month? What have been your best “scores” this week? Please share them with us!

Can I just go shopping with you next time? My bill never seems to dip below $190 (for 2 weeks) even when not buying extras.

Kris,
I’d love to have you anytime. 🙂

I had an awesome week too. I don’t think I spent over $30.00 for the week. Haven’t been quite this happy with my deals in awhile. Can I post a photo? Didn’t know if it was possible or allowed. One question. Did you (or anyone reading this) find the best life buttery spray. I went to two HyVee’s and neither carry it!
Kelly says
Heather –
Absolutely – you can either put a link to your photo in your comments or you can send me the picture via email at kansascitymamas @ gmail (dot) com. And no, I couldn’t find the Best Life Spray – all I saw were Best Life Tubs – which were also Buy One, Get One.

My Hyvee had a sign near the butter saying the ad was a misprint -the sale was supposed to be for the tubs only, not the spray. It didn’t look like my store even carried the spray.
