Kansas City Summer Reading Programs 2013
Summer Reading Programs are an awesome way to instill the love of reading with your kiddos and help them “keep” the aptitude they developed over the previous school year.
Here is a list of the summer reading programs that are available for the Kansas City area.
American Girl Reading Program – American Girl stores will have special reading events throughout the summer where you can listen to a story, create a special bookmark, and more. In addition, there are free American Girl ebooks on the site.
Barnes & Noble Imagination Destination – This summer reading program through Barnes & Noble gives your child the ability to earn a FREE book after reading 8 books and keeping track of them in a reading log. Runs May 21 through September 3, 2013.
Book Adventure – Sylvan offers this FREE online reading incentive program. After your child reads a book, they take a simple comprehension quiz to make sure they understood what they read. (Similar to AR tests.)
There are hundreds of books to choose from in all reading levels. These are common books that can be found at your local library. Once they have earned enough points they can trade them in for some really neat prizes.
Chuck E Cheese – Use the Chuck E Cheese Rewards Calendar to keep track of your child’s reading. After they complete two weeks of reading, take the completed calendar to Chuck E Cheese for 10 FREE tokens.
Junie B Jones Reading Club – Get a FREE Junie B Jones book, activity pages and special ID card through Random House.
PBS Summer Reading Program – Starts June 17, 2013, but it looks like a four-week program from SPROUT! that includes printables, games, activities, crafts and prizes for you and your kiddos. (Ran through iVillage.)
Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program – If you homeschool, you can sign up for the BOOK IT! program that has previous only been available to traditional schools
Pottery Barn Kids Book Club – Read all of the books on the PBK story list (as individuals or families) and once complete, take your list to Pottery Barn Kids to receive a FREE book. This event kicks off on May 16 through August 26, 2013.
Scholastic Summer Challenge – Kids log in and keep track of the minutes they have spent reading over the summer. As they read more, they are entered to win various prizes, including:
- 39 Clues prize pack: all the books from both series one, The Clue Hunt, and series two, Cahills vs. Vespers, in a The 39 Clues Backpack.
