This giveaway is now closed. Congrats Sarah P.!
There are some things in life you just can’t avoid. Death, taxes, and laundry.
Having the right tools in place can help make your life a little easier, for any unavoidable task.
Let’s take your laundry for example. Ever wish you could redesign your laundry room? Or maybe not a complete redesign, but maybe just move things around a bit or add something to the room to make your space more functional?
Jenny Komenda, decorator and blogger at The Little Green Notebook has some tips on how to create a more efficient space in your laundry room, including this one:
- Every surface can be painted or resurfaced! For less than $30 in materials, the outdated linoleum, brick pavers and old, dark cabinets were updated in this laundry room with paint and with a concrete overlay product.
Tide and Maytag have teamed up for a Brilliant Clean sweepstakes, where one winner will be chosen at random to receive an e-design consultation by Jenny, a Maytag Washer and Dryer, a year’s supply of Tide and $5,000! Ten runners up will receive a year’s supply of Tide.
Did you know the average family does 400 loads of laundry a year? “I believe it…” I can hear you mumble! With Tide and Maytag in your laundry room, and a functional, well-designed space, you can get clothes clean in one wash and have more time to spend with your family and friends.
When you purchase a new Maytag Powerwash machine and a 150 oz Tide at Home Depot, you’ll receive a $100 Home Depot gift card!
To help kick off the Brilliant Clean promotion, P&G has provided us with a $50 Home Depot Gift Card and Tide Samples to give away to one lucky Kansas City Mamas reader!
Here’s How To Enter The Giveaway
(Remember, each comment is considered a entry – so leave a separate comment each time.)
Leave me a comment and tell me your worst laundry experience.
Additional entry: Become a email subscriber to Kansas City Mamas. (I promise, I won’t spam you.) And then leave a comment and let me know.
Additional entry: Become in Like with Kansas City Mamas on Facebook. (We have fun, I promise.) And then leave a comment and let me know.
Contest will be open till end of day on July 31, 2013. Winner will be notified by email and has 48-hours to respond before another winner is chosen. Winner must reside in the lower 48-states of the continental USA. Good Luck.
Disclosure: P&G provided the giveaway prize, but I was not compensated in any other way. The written remarks are entirely my own. Want more information – check out my full disclosure statement.

I don’t really have bad laundry experiences. I have had the wash break down right in the middle of a load. I had to unload all of it, put it all in the tub to finish washing them by hand, then ring it all dry. What a pain.

Once our drainage line from the washing machine froze and when we tried to run a load, it overflowed due to the icy blockage.

My worst laundry experience was when I washed a down comforter that broke open at the seam and lost half the feathers in the wash, which clogged the machine and caused the water to run out. At least we had a drainage pan and pipe hooked up.

I think my worst laundry experience just happened yesterday. I washed a set of curtain panels, per instructions, and had 7 gromments come off the fabric. I spent over an hour last night with needle nose pliers, widening the gromments, threading the fabric back thru and squeezing the gromments back closed. Ugh!

When I was a teenager, I was helping my mom’s best friend out after a surgery, i believe, and went over to help her clean a bit and do some laundry. Well, her son was still living at home with her at the time, and I accidentally washed something dark/red with the whites and his underwear and socks came out pick. Embarrassing.

barbara mountjoy says
Back when we first moved to Pennsylvania we didn’t have a washer, so we bought a used wringer washer as a temporary solution. I’d never used one before, so it took awhile to get the hang of it. Unfortunately, I’m not very tall, so when I used the electric wringer, I had to stand very close to the machine. One day, as I was wringing the clothes, I leaned in to make sure the item was flat and the wringer caught the edge of my breast and started squeezing. I couldn’t get it stopped, but I wedged another item in so at least it didn’t get any more squished. I had to yell for my husband to come unplug the thing so I could get out. Highly embarrassing and painful, too!! I’m an email subscriber to KCM. Love love it.

We had just had the washer repaired so had been without for several days. I sent the first load off so pleased and thankful to have the washer back. When I checked back after half an hour, I discovered the laundry room had flooded (and dripped through the basement into a huge storage room. Uggh! What a nightmare! Lots of wet towels followed but I didn’t have to call the repairman back as originally assumed. The outflow tube had been dislodged and I just had to shove it back down!

I have had so many bad laundry experiences it is hard to pick only one so I will start with the first one. I was in high school and I can’t remember if it was mine or my sisters, but I believe it was a wool sweater. I washed it and the body of the sweater turned tiny while the sleeves remained long. It looked crazy.

Nothing like a nice fresh load of whites just out of the wash. Unless the washer blew out during that load and every single item ends up with black greasy spots all over them. I had to run to the dreaded laundromat and wash the load several times only to save about half of the items. It was by far the worst laundry experience I have ever had.

I have had 2 bad laundry experiences. One when my daughter had crayons in her pockets and I didn’t know it. The crayons went through the wash and then melted in the dryer and all over the clothes. The second was when my daughter decided to “hide” the last very large brownie that she extracted from the pan in the dryer. I had just started it. She opened it up and threw it in. It stopped. I heard it stop but didn’t know a large iced brownie was in my light load. I went in and restarted it- brownie all over pastel clothing. Fail.

Lived in some apartments and a laundry mat was behind us and to get there I had to carry all my laundry down a flight of stairs and across a grass patch. I was very pregnant which makes it hard to carry baskets of laundry anyway. I had my six year old in toe… It’s raining and I get to the laundry mat and wipe off my shoes on the carpet they have there and tell my kid to take his off before stepping onto the freshly mopped floor. I walked across and found me a washing machine, got it all in there when the owner started yelling at me that I got his floor and carpet dirty. (It wasn’t that bad) he told me I was stupid and fat and to never come back. I left crying my eyes out as I apologized to the man but he screamed at me till I left. Needless to say when my iron worker husband got home and I told him, he went over there and before going in got his work boots real good and muddy. Slopped it all over, yelled at the little mean man I was his wife and picked up our laundry because I was scared to go back.
Never went there again.

My worst experience was when my home washer was broke and I had to go to the laundry mat. Well, this was years ago, during the Barney show hay days. I had two full sets of towels and washcloths, that were folded, with everything else. I had definate stacks too. Whomever it was, took one towel and one facecloth, when I unloaded another machine. I never noticed until I got home. I felt so bad, my kids didn’t each have a towel. That is still a sad moment for me.

Worst experience was when washer started smelling hot went to investigate discovered it was also smoking and had hopped in front of the door so after giving it a little shove I was able to get in and yanked the cord to stop it. I had a hose break. Water was coming out so forceful I could not turn it off and I didn’t know where the water cut off was outside! I ran across the street and got my neighbor to turn it off he was soaked and not happy with me!! The water had gone from the laundry room in back of house all the way to my front door! Insurance company sent a company that night to get water up and put fans to dry it out. It caused the subfloor to bulk up so it turned out I got new subfloors new kitchen and laundry room floors and new carpet. It was a hassle we had to stay in a hotel for a week but getting new floors was great! Change your hose every five years and know where shut off is!

my worse laundry experience had to have been an ongoing one we currently deal with to this day. well see my washer wants to do what IT wants to do. Sometimes I load it with laundry, soap etc. and half way through the wash it stops. OR maybe it’s during the spin cycle. maybe it wants to shake rattle and roll across the floor. it’s a guessing game I hate to guess. But to add to that to get it to “work” you have to reset the outlet and start the load again. (time) and with 6 kids and 2 adults the 400 loads a year is funny. -my dryer is a hand me down and take over an hour or 2 to dry a load.

Hi! My worst laundry experience was when my family got into a huge mess of ticks and naturally we stripped off our clothes as fast as possible and threw them in the wash. I washed everything on hot to kill the ticks, but when I opened the washer once it was finished, the ticks were crawling up the machine and all around inside. It was awful!! I kept washing and couldn’t kill the little buggers (and they are so gross!!!). I had to take the clothes out and put them in a bag in the freezer to kill off the ticks. A lot of bleach killed the ticks left behind in the washer!

Our worse laundry experience was when we lived in Boston right around the corner from the laundry mat. We decided to make our Halloween costumes and we needed to dye some fabric. We decided to just do it in barrel of the washer. This is when we were very young and not too bright. The owner realized what we had done and was less than happy with us. I think he wanted to ban us from his establishment. We promised never to do something so stupid again. We never felt comfortable there after.
