We all love a good down vest!
They are like the yoga pants of tops. They are warm. Easy to wear. Comfortable. But, just like yoga pants, we can end up looking disheveled instead of put together.
Don’t worry. With the few simple tips on down vest fashion, you will look stylish picking up the kids, going to the grocery store, or a night on the town.

Pick your down vest carefully.
I always look for a vest with special details, like a fur collar, zippers, extra pockets, quilting, special stitching or a hood. In this day, with all the choices, why settle for just a plain vest?
Pick a vest with an athletic cut (aka tapers at your waist) or cinches inside the vest.
One of the biggest mistakes women make is to choose a boy cut vest (aka straight up and down). Unfortunately, with a boy cut, the straight lines create a illusion of a fuller middle section. (And no one needs any help with trying to look fuller in the middle!!) Another misstep, picking a vest that is too big. The rule of thumb is a vest should be snug (but not tight) when it is zipped. If it is loose, try a smaller size.
Pick a vest with the right amount of down.
Try to be like Goldilocks in The Three Bears and pick something “just right”. Too little “fluff” and your vest resembles a shirt. Too much, and you look like the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man.
Understand and adhere to the rule of THREE.
The rule of THREE is about layers. In order to wear a down vest fashionably, you should always wear three layers.
- Layer 1: Undershirt or regular shirt
- Layer 2: Sweater, Jacket or Shirt
- Layer 3: Vest
In addition, each of your layers should be one of these materials: HEAVY, MED WEIGHT, LIGHT. (So for example, with the Date Night Group, we have a light shirt, a medium weight jacket, and heavy vest.) Here is an example of one of my outfits using the rule of three.
Finish your outfit with some BLING.
I know it is “just a vest”, but it is dying to be near a gorgeous statement necklace or bracelet set. And BLING sets our look apart from the lumberjack who also wears a red vest.
There you go…you now know everything about down vest womens fashion! Super easy, right? And the good news is you probably have at least 20 outfit combinations already waiting for your in your closet!

Thanks Laura. Hopefully the weather will get cooler and I can actually include a photo or two of me in a vest. 🙂
