In our house we have a first-day-of-school tradition.
Each child gets a small “gift” as a way of saying “Happy New School Year.”
We started it when DS was going into Kindergarten because I always wanted my kids to be excited about the chance to have another year of going to school. Now, five years later, they get just as excited about seeing their friends and meeting their new teacher as they do to open their “Happy New School Year” gift.
I hope it always stays like this. I love Back-To-School and the shopping that goes with it. I love the new possibilities it brings. A new year of opportunity. The fresh school supplies, new backpacks, and unstained jeans.
So when Gordmans asked me to use their stores as part of my “Back To School” shopping this year, I couldn’t wait.
I’m familiar with Gordmans. I remember back-to-school shopping at Gordmans when I was kid with my mom. (And if I go back in my WAY. BACK. TIME. MACHINE. I even remember when it was Richmond Gordmans Department Store and they had an indoor play area that had an oversized dinosaur slide.)
I got my first pair of Lee Jeans at Gordman’s which I then stuck my hot pink Goody comb in the back pocket, because that is what was cool when I was in third grade.
I love Gordmans because it really allows you to get stylish and trendy clothes, accessories, shoes, and home furnishings for less. Gordmans carries only top quality, current-season department and specialty store merchandise at savings of up to 60% off the competitions ticketed prices every day. (Because who doesn’t like a deal?)

And now, with their new gRewards program, you are able to earn a $10 gift certificate for every 200 points you earn ($1 = 1 point).
Let me just say that the Gordmans of my youth was not nearly as cool as the Gordmans of my middle age. They had an awesome accessories, (I scored a chain/rhinestone bracelet for only $14.99), boys and girls departments, and home decor department.
I won’t tell you how much I purchased in the home decor department when I suppose to be shopping for my kids.

Seriously, these vintage comic book artwork would be PERFECT for a boys room and they were under $50.00.
And Gordmans has a couple of cool promotions going on.
- August 16 – 18, gRewards members will receive 10% off entire purchase and a free pair of earbuds with purchase.
- Through September 2nd, Teachers will receive 20% off a a single item when they show their Teacher ID at checkout. (Because Teacher’s need Back To School clothes too.)

And for me, as soon as I walked in the door, I found the perfect Happy Back To School Day present for my daughter…thia fuzzy, orange lounge pillow. She’s been asking for one for awhile, and at $17.99, which was three dollars cheaper than the one we found at a big box retail store.
She got it yesterday (since that was our first day of school) and has been in love ever since.
So how do you get your kids excited about Back To School Shopping?
