I hope the New Year is off to a wonderful start for you!
So far, I’ve organized a sock drawer, my cookbook shelf and found a place for all of the Christmas gifts (not always an easy feat when the kids get something that doesn’t fit in the toy box.
I’m sure you can guess that one of my New Year’s goals is getting more organized! Maybe I should re-state that – my goal is actually to complete 2 small projects each week. Every year, I start with these big goals (last year, I wanted to redo all of our flower beds) and then the small stuff (like sock drawers) get chaotic because I’m focusing on one big project. Well, I’ve learned that it’s actually all the small chaos that’s making me feel less organized. So this year, I’m dealing with the little stuff.
Did you set any goals for the year?
Our family spent some time setting a few family goals – what we’d like to do and accomplish in 2013. I love doing this each year because I enjoy hearing what the kids want to achieve — my daughter wants to learn Greek – (she’s 9 but reading ‘The Lightning Thief’, so she dreams big). We also talked about new places we’d like to visit (we’re considering South Dakota, so let me know if you’ve got any travel tips!)
And speaking of travel, there’s a great series running on the blog this week: The ABC’s of Family Field Trips! Explore more than 50 ideas for attractions that you can visit, along with tips & resources to help you plan some fun family outings.
And our readers also let us know what they loved with the Top 12 Ideas for Families in 2012!
Family Fun for January
If you’re looking for a few good books, we’ve got some recommendations – Winter Reads for Kids to Teens lists pictures books, read-alouds and chapter books.
Are you’re trying to find a way to get the kids to pick up a book? Search our Books to Movies database for more than 100 books that have been made into movies (and then bribe the kids with a movie night if they finish the book – popcorn too!)
There will also be new guides coming soon too – the Funville exhibit will open soon at Crown Center, Shawnee Town is expanding to a 1929 Truck Farm and there will be new activities at Mahaffie Farmstead, Nelson-Atkins Museum and many others places this spring! Oh!, and the World War I Museum is hosting hands-on family activities every Saturday in January.
Wishing you lots of family fun in 2013!
