Thirsty Thursday Wine Review: 2010 The White Knight Moscato

Thirsty Thursday is the quest to drink good, cheap wine that is $10.00 and under. Want some more recommendations? Check out the past cheap wine posts on Thirsty Thursday.

I don’t care for sweet wines.

It isn’t that I don’t like them. But as I’ve discussed in my “Where Are The White Wines” post, I just don’t appreciate them in the same way as some of my friends.

So when I received a sample of the 2010 The White Knight Moscato, my first reaction was “Bummer. I hate Moscato.”

But after remembering that I have been surprised by other wines before – I decided to treat it as a dessert wine and see what I thought.

The 2010 White Knight Moscato blends three muscat grapes – Alexandria, muscat canelli, and orange muscat – with a bit pinot grigio to create a less-sweet but more alcohol intense wine. The wine starts with amazing spring floral notes of lilacs and honeysuckle and bit of sweet pear.

With the first sip, flavors of ripe pears, nectarines, mandarin oranges and apple take hold and finish with a clean citrus and slightly ginger.

And then this wine got REALLY interesting….

As I said at the beginning of this post, I was treating this wine as a dessert wine. So I had a glass with a fresh Chewy Ginger Cookies.

And OH MY WORD….it was quite amazing.

There was some chemical reaction with the ginger in the cookies and the ginger and pear in the wine that intensified the flavors of both the wine and cookie.

Which then got me thinking…

This may be the perfect dessert wine for all of those Fall Goodies – Pumpkin Cake, Ginger Whoopie Pies, Pumpkin Muffins, etc.

So while Moscato is normally thought of as a summer wine – I would like to challenge you to serve this wine with your next Fall Dessert and thoroughly enjoy the compliment. (But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it on a warm Indian Summer Day either.)

What about you? Have you ever had a wine taste so different with food? Let me know in the comments or link up because life is too short to drink bad wine.

Don’t forget to use the Thirsty Thursday Wine List when creating your wine shopping list.

Note: This wine should be available at most liquor outlets. Please be responsible when you drink wine – and never drive drunk…seriously, that is just stupid in this day in age.
