I love wine.
I love the Central Coast in California.
I’ve been there more times than about any other Kansan. (I think.)
I know every nook, cranny, new vineyard, best place to eat, and best place to celebrity watch (I met Noah Wyle and his beautiful daughter and Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi).
So when I was sent two bottles from Daniel Gehrs Wines (Los Olivos, CA), I was excited because this was “my kind of wine, from my kind of region”.
From the California Wine Club, I received the Daniel Gehrs Wines 2011 Chenin Blanc from the White Hills Vineyard and a Bottle of 2009 Merlot (both from the Central Coast/Santa Barbara County).
I will admit to being surprised at the selection, because neither of these wines are the “well-known” from the area. With that being said…both had received awards and it isn’t uncommon for great bottles to come from really small, well-kept areas of specific grapes.
I liked the Merlot. It was typical of a Central Coast Merlot. Amazing nose of black cherry and cola. It was very fruit forward with hints of cedar and ripe black cherries.
I was less impressed with the Chenin Blanc because it was too sweet for my taste. Does that make it a bad wine? No…it had amazing tastes of honey, green apple, and pear with a touch of floral. It was just too sweet for me.
So between last month’s wine selection and this month’s selection…would I sign up for the California Wine Club?
Depends.
I’m fortunate. I know what wines I like and don’t like. I can usually tell from the description, area and varietial.
With that being said, this may be the perfect gift (for you or someone else) if they are learning about wine and have never spent any time in wine country. I’ve said this over and over again…but you will never know what you really like until you have the time to taste and experience many different wines.
Because with wine…it’s all what you like. There are no right or wrong answers.
