Connecting With Kids When They Go Back To School

backtoschoolkcmamas

It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over and it’s already time to head back to school.  Some kids will be really excited about starting school and seeing friends again.  Others will decide that NOW is the time to start sleeping in!

No matter how much I try to prepare, I’m never ready for the influx of paper, the crazy schedules and all the homework help the kids seem to need.  So I thought it would be beneficial to round up a few great resources to help everyone have a smooth transition into the new school year.

Connecting With Kids When They Go Back To School

Getting the Kids Excited for a New Grade – Sometimes kids are a little nervous about heading back to classes or entering a new grade.  Try a few fun reads from this list of Back to School Books for Kids to help kids adjust to their new grade level.

10 Awesome Homework Helpers – Got math facts to practice?  Tired of the same old spelling words?  Here are some excellent activities, ideas and websites to help make homework more fun this year!

Finding Time to Connect – It’s hard to spend quality time together once the crazy schedules and long school days begin.  Try one of these 10 ways to connect with your kids in 15 minutes or less when you feeling like you’re losing touch with each other.

Make Helping at Home Easier – Back to school means lots more stuff coming into the house and a lot less time to put it all away.  Start the year off by giving the kids more responsibility for their own items with these easy ways to make your home more kid-friendly.

Volunteering at School – Not up for being a room parent this year?  There are so many ways you can help out at school.  Here are a few unique ways for volunteering at your child’s school that don’t involve being in the classroom.

Spending Time Outside – A little fresh air goes a long way to making the day and evening easier.  Make sure to get the kids outside afterschool. There are a number of indoor activities that can be done outdoors during after school hours.

And remember, summer doesn’t officially end until Labor Day so take some time to fit in a few end-of-summer adventures this month too!

Best Wishes for a great start to the School Year!

This post is by my friend Jacquie Fisher who is the author and curator of KCEdventures. KC Edventures is an online resource that provides parents & grandparents with ideas to keep kids creative, curious and connected to the world around them. (In my speak, they give you ideas that combine hands-on, with books, and places to go in Kansas City.)
