About

Kelly Snyder for The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

Hi, I’m Kelly. And I’m becoming a Redefined Mom.

What’s a Redefined Mom?

I wish I knew.

While the rest of my titles may come and go, one remains. I’m a mom.

Everything else changes on a daily basis as I pull tools from my arsenal. Moreover, the rules that govern how I use those tools have changed, too. What was considered normal in my mom’s generation (or my grandma’s, for that matter) doesn’t always apply to me. I’m not content to simply go through life; I prefer to suck the marrow from it time and again.

However, the dreams and aspirations I had in my 20s are very different from those I have now.

(Except fashion. I still have a passion for fashion.)

I don’t have the desire to become a corporate ladder-runner, but I want to work. I don’t have the desire to be rail thin, but I want to be healthy. I don’t need to have the latest trend, but I want to feel good about the clothes I wear. Finally, I’ve decided that while stuff is nice, traveling is more fun.

So I’m redefining who I want to be when I grow up. I’ve weathered the days of first jobs, new babies, new house, new husband, big disappointments and big successes. Now I’m ready to begin the next chapter.

Going forward, there will be a little more freedom (from being a mom), a little less freedom (going back to work), a little more pressure (when did those wrinkles show up?), and a little less pressure (we don’t have to be friends, because I’m not sure I like you).

All the while, still being a mom. Because, as we all know, that is the one constant.

So come along for the ride! We can make up the rules together as we redefine who we want to be in the next chapter of our lives.
